Professor Helen Moewaka Barnes (Te Kapotai, Ngapuhi) is Director Whariki, Co-Director SHORE & Whariki Research Centre, College of Health, Massey University. She is a multidisciplinary researcher, with expertise in theory development, quantitative and qualitative methods, research design, and project management. She has expertise in indigenous health, methods and methodologies, research ethics and tikanga, community engagement and Māori research capacity building. Current areas of research include natural environments and health, life-course approaches to health and wellbeing, alcohol, haputanga, health promotion, and evaluation research. Helen has leadership roles with Ngā Pae o te Maramatanga Māori Centre of Research Excellence and A Better Start National Science Challenge and is Director of Tangata Whenua Tangata Ora, a Health Research Council Programme, investigating health gain through whenua based initiatives.
